Green Initiatives of PSG iTech

PSG Institute of Technology and Applied Research strives to embrace a smart, connected, healthy and vibrant campus with integrated urban energy systems focusing on generation, storage, distribution and management of renewable energy. The focal point is to adopt best practices and build a modular, adaptive, smart, clean and green campus by the year 2025.

100% GREEN ENERGY USAGE

Focused Areas
  • Green Cover
  • Building Design
  • Renewable Energy
  • Waste Management
  • Energy and Water Conservation

Reduction of CO2 emission

The extensive green area on campus, exceeding 46,000 square meters and featuring over 10,000 trees of 100 different species, helps reduce CO2 emissions by an estimated 200 tonnes annually. Notably, recycled water is utilized for watering these plants.

Green cover of the campus (40 acres with carpet area 10 lakh sq.ft)

Afforestation through Miyawaki Method adjacent to E5 Civil block covering 4471 sq mts with 10000 trees

Green Building

  • GRIHA Exemplary Performance Award was awarded to PSGiTech for the demonstration of “Passive Architecture Design” by GRIHA Council during GRIHA Summit 2017.
  • Around 26% of replacement of cement with fly ash by weight of cement is used in the structural concrete
  • Over 52% of the area is daylit.
  • Use of high-performance glass and minimal air-conditioning.
  • Use of solar power, use of Dolpur stone to reduce heating of the building facade.
  • Luminous efficacy is achieved through LED flood lights in the campus.
  • ECBC complaint glass has been used in the buildings.
  • The buildings have used panels with recycled material in the false ceiling.

Awards

GRIHA Exemplary Performance Award was awarded to PSGiTech for the demonstration of “Passive Architecture Design” by GRIHA Council during GRIHA Summit 2017, New Delhi. Dr.N.Saravanakumar, HoD, Mechanical Engineering, PSGiTech along with Ar. Sangeet Sharma, S D Sharma & Associates has received the GRIHA Exemplary Performance Award for Green Building.

Renewable Energy

  • Use of Green Power by committing to generation of power through renewable resources like solar and wind.
  • Concentrated Solar thermal plant is installed with a solar energy capacity of 256 kW
  • Solar PV cells of 400kW capacity are installed on the roof tops of administrative and engineering blocks.
  • Solar heating is used for generating hot water and for cooking purpose.

Waste Management

Bio-Degradable Waste Management

Food scraps and vegetable trimmings are collected on campus. A portion is diverted to the biogas plant, where it's broken down to generate biogas. The remaining organic matter is composted, creating nutrient-rich fertilizer for the plants.

Paper Waste

Collected and stored in a separate place
Sold to third party for recycling

Non-Bio-Degradable Waste Management

One use plastics are banned in the college campus.
The chemical/salt storage containers are disposed to third party

Segregation bins

Organic Vegetables

Compost Pits

Energy & Water Conservation

Reuse of treated waste water generated from campus and hostel

Sprinkler Irrigation for lawn and horticulture development

Water saving fixtures and signages inside the campus

Rain water Harvesting Structures

  • Average amount of water supply to the college and hostel is 1,96,733 liters per day out of which 75% is generated as wastewater. All the sewage water generated in both residential and academic campus are treated through sewage treatment plants.
  • Water Sensors are installed in the restrooms
  • Low-flow faucet aerators, mist aerators and shower aerators are installed
  • Sprinkler systems are used to minimize the use of water in lawns.
  • Ground water recharge by creating rain water harvesting structures at 10 places in the campus.

Awareness Programmes

Jal Sakthi Abhiyan 2019

The orientation meeting for Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA) was held on 22ndJuly with 70 participants where the following topics were explained to students.

  1. Water conservation and rainwater harvesting
  2. Renovation of water bodies
  3. Reuse of recharge structures
  4. Watershed development
Ground water Recharge Program along with Vanam Foundation

Ground water recharge program along with Vanam Foundation in Selakarchal village near Sulurwas implemented by planting 2000 palm tree seeds on 18th August 2019(Sunday). Nearly 35 students and Vanam Foundation together planted 2000 palm tree seeds in 36 acre lake.

A Guest lecture by Dr. C. Buvaneswaran , Scientist-F from Institute of forest genetics and tree breeding on "Conservation of water and forest" was delivered on 22nd March 2018 for the students of Civil engineering and the members of Eco-club.

One day SURVEY CAMP at Annur, Metuppalayam and Singanallur to take survey on drinking water facilities, ground water extraction and sanitation in the villages.

As part of the One Student One Tree drive, 200 saplings were planted by Eco-club volunteers and first year students.
