Second year civil engineering students went for an industrial visit to Chinnakkarai Common Effluent Treatment Plant Limited at Kuppandampalayam near Tirupur to learn about the effluent treatment rocess on 23th.

COMMON EFFLUENT TREATMENT PLANT:
The effluent treatment process included three major steps. The primary process included biological treatment. The secondary included filtration and clarification. The tertiary included the removal of salts.


PRIMARY PROCESS:
The raw effluent is sent into the storage and homogenous tank where the effluent from various member units are collected and mixed. Then it is sent into biological oxidation tank where the organic chemical compounds which are in greater amount are reduced by bacteria and the colour is reduced by 10 to 20 percent. The clarified water is aerated by blower, diffuser and flow mixer for the return set time of 48 hours in the tank of 6 metre depth. In the aerator sludge is formed.

SECONDARY PROCESS:
To settle the sludge, the... is sent into the secondary clarifier where it is mixed with chlorine gas or sodium hypochlorite gas. The total suspended solids which causes the turbidity is sent into the quartz filter first for filtration and then sent into the color remover resin filter where the colour is reduced. Finally it is sent into the resin softener filter which contains weak anionic resin to remove the hardness.
