An industrial visit was arranged by the Electrical and Electronics department for the third year students to PSG Industrial Institute, Coimbatore on 26.09.2017 accompanied by three faculty members, Dr. C.S.Subash Kumar, Mr. K. Anandhakumar and Ms.C.V. Pavithra. Before reaching the industry a discussion was arranged about the types of pumps, motor, rating, protection in motor, types of insulators and standards in motor manufacturing which provided a better knowledge to proceed. We reached the industry by 1.00 pm and the in-charge officer introduced himself and explained the industry�s various products like single phase and three phase induction motor, monoblock, submersible pumps and lathes.

We first entered into the Rotating Machinery Division (RMD) where they manufacture motor of rating from 0.5 hp to 50 hp in particular squirrel cage induction motors and pumps for commercial purposes. In winding section where they manually wound the PVC insulated wires for stator in concentrated lap type. Machining section where they stacked the laminated sheets for rotor, inserted copper bars and grinded the rotor surface and impellers. Testing section, here they conducted insulation test, high voltage test and rotor balancing for motor and performance test for pumps. In die casting section they casted the rotors for squirrel cage induction motor. And assembly section, here they assembled all the parts and painted the finished products.

We took almost an hour and a half in RMD. After that we moved to the Heavy Engineering Division (HED) where they manufacture lathes, PSG 141 and PSGA 141 for training purpose and PSG 124 and PSGA 124 for commercial purposes. Also we saw gear manufacturing machines.

After observing all the sections, we discussed the various aspects of the real time problems and we concluded this trip by completing a test for checking our understanding which was very useful for summarizing.

It is rightly said that �See and know� is better the �Read and learn�. By this visit we got to know more about manufacturing of motor and pumps and real time tests carried out on machines in industries.
