A Two-Day Workshop on Internet of Things on 29th and 30th of July, 2016 for II year CSE students

A two-day workshop on Internet of Things was organized on 29th and 30th of July, 2016 for II year CSE students. The resource persons are Mr.Jaideep Rao and Mr.Vinay of SAP Labs, Bangalore.

The workshop began with an interactive introductory session on "Internet of Things" on 29th July 2016. Mr.Jaideep Rao asked the students to give their own definition on IOT in a single word. After getting a huge response from the students, he compiled all ideas together to give SAP's own definition of IOT. He further explained how SAP implements IOT in managing huge volume of data to aid SAP's customers transform their businesses.

Mr Jaideep introduced SAP Gateway and SAP HANA cloud platform to the students. SAP Gateway is a technology that provides a simple way to connect devices, environments and platforms to SAP software. It enables intelligence at the edge of the network and aid SAP customers to automated decision making. SAP HANA Cloud Platform is the world's leading cloud based IOT platform that enables memory computing, predictive analytics, spatial analytics, geo location, telematics and much more.

The students were divided into ten groups with six members in each team. Each team chose a topic among the following nine futuristic topics given to them.

  1. Smart Home
  2. Smart Family
  3. Child Care
  4. Health and Medicine
  5. Transport and Travel
  6. Business
  7. Policy Making
  8. Safe Measures
  9. Smart City


Each team came up with new innovative ideas on the chosen topic. The team members started exploring the tech world to grab the top and the best innovative ideas. After a 30-minute break, each team was given a short duration of two minutes for delivering their ideas. All the ideas were outstanding and unique in their own way. Some of the top ideas proposed were:

  1. Smart child parental care
  2. Automated Emergency Alert System
  3. Traffic density predictor
  4. Smart hover board
  5. Photosensitive automated illumination system

Mr.Vinay explained some smart ideas which are already implemented and a few ideas that are in progress. He stressed that all massively successful projects began with a smart simple idea. The afternoon session ended up at 4.30 pm after all the teams presented their brain storming ideas.

The morning session on 30th July began with an introduction about SAP HANA Cloud Platform. SAP HANA Cloud Platform is SAP's open platform as a service for developing modern cloud based business applications. With comprehensive services and capabilities, SAP HANA Cloud Platform is utilized by the world's best developers to quickly build, extend and integrate business apps in the cloud.

Mr. Vinay shared his experience on working with proximity sensors to prevent road accidents. He also encouraged the students to do experiments with simple sensors and apply them to meet our day to day requirements.

Mr.Jaideep explained how SAP Aircraft Management System was made possible with SAP's Predictive Maintenance and Real Time Analysis which automatically detects the parts of the aircrafts that needs maintenance.

The trainers explained few basic hands-on exercises with the arduino kit and the students started implementing their innovative ideas. The students modified the source code and came up with amazing models like SOS Morse code Model, Rhythm generator, etc. Every student had a creative and innovative experience which would help them in developing projects to solve real world problems.
