"Process Engineering" by Dr.G.Ranganathan, Rover Industry 09th july 2016 - GUEST LECTURE & WORKSHOP
The session started with a Welcome address by Dr P V Mohanram, Principal, Psg I Tech, and he mention the importance of the topic "Process Engineering". He gave the overview of the topic and briefed the speaker Dr.G.Ranganathan, former Managing Director,Rover Industry who is a alumini of PSG. He was invited as chief guest to the occasion. He is well specialized in manufacturing processes which is his core knowledge. He is the visiting professor of PSG Tech handling a course "Process Engineering". The session started with the importance of process engineering in industries and it was explained with real time examples. The the students were given a stepped shaft of varying diameter with many number of process machined out of it. The manufacturing diagram of the shaft was also provided. The diagram had the dimensions with tolerances marked on it, also had indication of surface finish symbols also. The shaft had operations like
  • Facing
  • Turning
  • Taping
  • Undercutting
  • Knurling
  • Grinding
  • Counter sinking
  • Chamfering.
  • By listing out these the speaker also told each group to read out the listed processes done on the shaft. He also noted that listening skills must be developed rather than reading and learning. Second session we were given with oil pump of Hero motor bikes which is the most important part of the engine fitted in crank shaft. Oil pump had an oil seal, a piston, annulus gear, a planet gear pivoted to the piston. Curved holes is present out of which bigger hole for suction and smaller for discharge of the oil. The speaker explained all the parts of oil pump and at last he organised a query session in which students can ask any doubt about the session. He then explained his presentation which mostly dealt about statistics relating industries and it's older achievement and what technology brought us today differing from olden period. On the whole the session was very much informative and useful which would help us very much. Finally Dr G Chandramohan gave the vote of thanks and he concluded the session with
