The software training programme on "Open source GIS and mapping" was conducted during 10.08.16 to 20.08.16. About 30 students were registered and undergone training for 20 hours. Mr.S.Arunachalam, Asst Professor and GIS Analyst, Higher College of Technology, Oman has given the training to the students. The areas of training include Geotechnical mapping, Environmental mapping, Survey analysis, GPS operation and basic Remote sensing and GIS. The students were given basic information on GIS tools, software usage and areas of application during the first phase of training. Later field study datas were given to the students and made them to make a map. Especially the pollution datas of Coimbatore city was given to the students and maps were prepared by each individual.
The application of GPS in tracking a vehicle was taught and a live tracking and monitoring was made on a private vehicle moving in Palladam town. The datas obtained through surveying during survey camp was made into map and the trainer asked the student to do mapping using their batch datas.
The rainfall runoff maps for different districts were prepared by the students based on the data supplied by the trainer. A demo on collecting latitude and longitude using Hand GPS instruments were given.
At the end session, the job opportunities lying behind this software and GIS subject, especially in ISRO, Ground water department, Indian army, GPS manufacturing companies, self employments were well explained by the coordinator and the trainer
Finally the students were instructed to use this software for mapping their datas, locations, routes etc available in their projects for better understanding and report making. Finally, the Coordinator of the workshop, Mr.S.Elayaraja, Ap/Civil proposed the vote of thanks.
